KR celebrates its 50th anniversary with Greek shipping community
The Korean Register of Shipping (KR) - an IACS member classification society - continued a year of celebrations to mark its 50th anniversary with a dinner in Greece on Tuesday evening (5 October).
Staged at the prestigious Astir Palace, Vouliagmeni, more than 450 Greek shipping luminaries and diplomats joined the KR team to mark the society's half century in style. Among those attending were Jang Tae-shin, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to the Hellenic Republic; Adam Polemis, Chairman of Polembros Shipping (Chairman of KR Hellenic Committee); Vafias Nikolaos, Chairman of Stealth Maritime Corp; Charalambros Mylonas, Chairman of Transmed Shipping Ltd.; and Nick Savvas, Chairman of Cosmo Shipmanagement S.A.
Hosting the event was Mr Oh Kong-Gyun, Chairman and CEO of the Korean Register who commented:
"Greece is one of the world's leading shipping countries with a rich and diverse maritime heritage. I am honoured that so many shipping people have chosen to join us this evening to help celebrate this important company milestone. We established our European headquarters here in Athens in 2008 and held a technical seminar and the sixth meeting of the KR Hellenic Committee earlier today. These are just a couple of examples which show how important the Greek shipping community is to the Korean Register. I am extremely proud of our strong association with Greece and I look forward to continuing this fruitful and mutually-beneficial partnership long into the future."
This dinner was a series of events that have celebrated KR's 50th anniversary across the world. Celebratory events were held earlier in Korea, Vietnam, India, UK, China, Singapore, and Turkey with the final function planned in Hong Kong later this year.
